Informed of uncontrollable violence and anarchy in Petrograd and Moscow, Tsar Nicholas II abdicates the throne of the Russian Empire on behalf of himself and his son, Aleksei while aboard his personal train in the city of Pskov. The three-hundred year-old Romanov Dynasty ends the following day when Nicholas’ brother, the Grand Duke Mikhail Aleksandrovich, refuses to accept the crown.
Formal authority passes to a Provisional Government comprised of members drawn from the State Duma.
