Ghosts of Leningrad

Sergey Larenkov is a St. Petersburg-based amateur photographer and graphic artist who specializes in “computational rephotography” — a digital technique used to make a new photo match precisely the point-of-view of an older photo.

Most of Larenkov’s “rephotographs” incorporate historical images drawn from the Great Patriotic War; among the most haunting are those contained in his series devoted to the 900-day Siege of Leningrad.

Sample images from Larenkov’s portfolio on wartime Leningrad / contemporary St. Petersburg appear below. (Click to view a larger version and caption)

The complete collection is available as a slide-show in Larenkov’s Livejournal scrapbook, “The Leningrad Blockade” (text in Russian). For more information and other samples of Larenkov’s work, visit his website: Связь времен/Link to the Past
